BRIEF HISTORY

 
1957 – The company originated from a Filipino family business. When Rufino D. Antonio and Associates, Inc., originally engaged in architectural and engineering activities migrated to the appliance importations from Japan and expanded to motorcycles


1959 –
Within this year, it started to organize its nationwide dealership for motorcycles and appliances. In one of his travels in Japan, Rufino D. Antonio met Mr. Atsuto Daiza from Suzuki Motor Co. LTD. And an agreement was forged to appoint Rufino D. Antonio and Associates, Inc. as Suzuki’s distributor in RP


1972 –
The business expanded along the years, and with sales more than expected, a factory to handle semi knockdown production was established in Canley Road, Pasig, Philippines.


1975 to 1983–
A progressive motorcycle manufacturing program was established in the country and by 1975; Rufino D. Antonio & Associates was one of the only four companies given the license to important motorcycles in the Philippines.
As the government guidelines were very much directed towards localization of component parts for motorcycles, the company decided to enter into a joint venture with Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd. Of Japan. In 10th of July 1975, the new joint venture company was born under the name of Antonio Suzuki Corporation. For several years up to 1983, the operations of the company progressed and motorcycle sales steadily began to rise.


1984 –
After the assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., the country’s economy took a downward spiral, and from 1984, hardly any motorcycles were being imported because of low demand and strict foreign exchange controls implemented by the government.


1985 –
The board of directors of the company consisting of all-Filipino owners met and decided to sell all of its holdings in the Antonio Suzuki Corporation to Suzuki Motor Company Ltd. of Japan. In February of 1985, the company became a wholly owned company in the Philippines by Suzuki Motor Company Ltd. The company was totally reorganized and the name was changed to Suzuki Philippines, Incorporated. As years went by, the Philippine economy started to pick up, so the new company started recovering at a very fast pace. So from its start in 1985, selling about a hundred units monthly, it had grown to this day, by selling and producing thousands of units monthly.


1990 –
Suzuki Philippines was the first to ship 114 units of motorcycles outside the country such as Guatemala, Suzuki S.A.


1993 –
The peak of motorcycle exportations began. Suzuki Philippines shipped out 845 units to various customers such as Guatemala, Suzuki South America; priory imports in Dublin, Ireland, Buenos Aires in Argentina, and SA Veleclair in Dakar / Senegal.


1994 –
As early as this year, Suzuki launched the Suzuki Crystal which set new standards for speed and effortless riding.


1996 –
The off-road market welcomed the new TSR 125 with its motocross spec linkage suspension and high capacity camelback fuel tank.


1998 –
Suzuki presented the SS100 Frontier Scooter, the company’s first foray in the high-growing scooter market. Also same year, the crystal was replaced with the Suzuki Swing with its more upgraded features.


1999 – October of 1999, also marked a milestone in the history of the company when Suzuki Philippines, Inc. took over the automobile operations of Suzuki in the country from Pilipinas Transport Industries Inc. (PTII), greatly strengthening the image and capability of Suzuki’s four wheel division.


2000 –
July of this year when Suzuki automobile launched its new flagship model which is the Grand Vitara with its all new 2.5 Liter V6 engine – building on the rich heritage of the Vitara model with the sports utility vehicle (SUV) market.


2001 – May of 2001, the year emerged the 4-stroke Suzuki Shogun 110cc, the most powerful and yet economical model in its class, because of its sophisticated twin dome combustion engine design and its highly efficient internal oil cooling system that prevents excessive engine over-heating.

2002 – In August, SPH launched Jimny,

2003 – Grand Vitara XL-7

2004 – Upgraded Jimny

2005 – May APV

2005 – in August, SPH launched the Suzuki Swift and the Grand Vitara adding
